Sea Turtle

MIAMI (AFP) – Move over James Cameron. A sea turtle found a waterproof camera in the Caribbean, somehow activated the device, filmed itself and is now a YouTube sensation.

Back in May US Coast Guard agent Paul Schultz found a digital camera in a waterproof case on a beach in Key West, Florida, and posted images he found on its memory chip on the Internet in an attempt to find its owner.

In a video clip dated January 2010 “a turtle came across the camera, and it’s really hard to tell how, but it turns the camera on and recorded itself swimming with the camera,” Schultz told AFP.

“When I saw the video, I thought first that someone was getting attacked by a sea creature,” Schultz said.

“I thought that a diver was getting attacked,” he said. However, he later realized that the camera was just hitching a ride with a sea turtle.

“The last thing the camera owner did was shoot a video underwater, and then it goes right into the next video with the camera turning around in the water,” Schultz said.

The video can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E43sg-Ytt58.

Schultz eventually found the owner, a Dutch navy sailor who lost the camera when he was diving off the island of Aruba in November.

As the crow flies, Aruba, off the Caribbean coast of Venezuela, is some 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) from Key West, Florida.

But the camera likely took a roundabout journey on the Loop Current, which would have taken it from Aruba to the coast of central America, past Belize and the Yucatan peninsula, around the western coast of Cuba, into the Gulf Stream and on to the Florida Keys.

“I’m totally amazed about this,” Schultz said.

New GoldenEye game

June 23, 2010

Never say never, gamers.

On Tuesday, Activision unveiled GoldenEye 007, a re-imagined take on a Nintendo 64 classic that many consider to be among the greatest first-person shooter games ever created. And like its forbear, the new version will be a Nintendo exclusive when it arrives this holiday for the Wii console.

The reveal took place during Nintendo’s E3 2010 press conference, just hours before the official start of the game industry’s annual mega-convention in Los Angeles. While Nintendo certainly made waves with its other announcements, the coming of a new GoldenEye rivals them all.

Perhaps the most notable tweak is a casting change. Current Bond Daniel Craig will replace traditional GoldenEye lead Pierce Brosnan as the star of the show, and while that might not sit well with GoldenEye purists, the game itself looks to stay true to form.

With an emphasis on multiplayer (the real hallmark of GoldenEye), the new effort boasts 40 different characters, 5 maps, 3 basic modes and 16 modifiers that will purportedly let gamers create over 500 different kinds of multiplayer games. It will also be playable online with up to 8 players and include some sort of experience system rewarding online play. The game will support multiple control schemes as well, including the somewhat underused Wii Zapper.

Released in 1997 for the N64, the original GoldenEye was a bona fide smash. It enjoys a startling 96 rating on Metacritic and has sold over eight million copies, making it far and away the best-selling Bond game ever.

Whitney Houston Sound-Alike

June 21, 2010

Claudine Zap in Stop The Presses!

Whitney Houston may be struggling with her career, but her sound-alike is hitting a high note. The Taiwanese singing sensation Lin Yu-Chun, who rose from obscurity to YouTube stardom thanks to the Taiwan version of “American Idol,” is now a true star with a record deal from Sony.

Houston was supposed to be on a comeback tour, but instead she’s being told never to come back. The artist’s performance was called “a national scandal” by London’s Independent, and she was booed in Australia.

The pop princess’s once-soaring sounds are now “ragged and raw,” according to one critic, who added that between songs she could be heard “wheezing and panting and occasionally breaking into a scary Wicked Witch of the West cackle.” Ouch.

Maybe the deteriorating diva can take comfort in knowing that her protégé has found all the inspiration he needed from her recording of “I Will Always Love You.” His version shot him to instant Internet fame, which led to the record deal with Sony.

While only 24, the young talent was originally compared to the unconventional-looking Susan Boyle for his bowl cut and surprisingly strong vocals. He seems to be taking fame in stride. “You don’t have to be a good-looking man or woman to succeed,” he said. “Just be yourself and try your best.”

Yes, try your best – and have a killer voice. Maybe Whitney Houston should consider bringing him in to do some of the heavy lifting on her besieged tour.

You can watch Lin Yu-Chun’s audition on “Avenue to Stardom” here.

The goals from England vs. the U.S. recreated with Legos

June 15, 2010

By Brooks Peck

The people who make Legos decided to get in on the World Cup spirit by recreating the goals scored in certain matches – in this case, Saturday’s 1-1 draw between England and the U.S. – with their product. There really isn’t too much you can say about this delightful bit of nonsense.

I do like how they interpret every person involved in the match as being so happy, even though almost all of them have the same exact hairstyle (Lego Heskey may want to get that gaping hole on top of his head looked at). I’m also not sure why they have the goalkeepers wearing caps – must be some form of Lego revisionist history. But Lego Clint Dempsey’s ball control is just as amazing as real Clint Dempsey’s. And I would definitely pay good money to see Lego Clint rap.

If that isn’t enough Lego football action for you, here’s their recreation of Germany’s four goals against Australia:

I wonder why they didn’t take the time to make a Lego recreation of Uruguay’s constipating 0-0 draw with France.

The dog that’s just dyeing to be a tiger

June 11, 2010

By Mail Foreign Service

If this strange creature growled at you, you wouldn’t know whether to run from his sharp claws or pat him on the head and give him a biscuit.

From a distance, its striped orange and black coat makes it look like a particularly odd tiger.

But it’s actually a retriever, the victim of the latest craze among some dog owners in China to dye their pets to look like other animals.

The Chinese are always quick to embrace bizarre trends, and it is not unusual for owners to take their dogs to grooming parlours where they are not only given a shampoo and trim, but a multi-coloured dye job as well.

Today the retriever was joined by three furry friends whose dye jobs were much more convincing.

The tiny, fluffy dogs were the spitting image of baby giant pandas thanks to their makeovers.

The animals were pictured after being transferred to Zhenghou from Southwest China’s Sichuan province at the weekend.

Recent figures show money spent on pets across the nation has seen nearly a 500 per cent increase between 1999 and 2008 – but, arguably, at the cost of their pets’ dignity.

Quite what the animals might think about it is another matter.
